今日は5月12日、快晴。
……いや、晴れすぎです。
ゴールデンウィーク頃からまともに雨が降っておらず、気温もかなり高め。
Today is May 12th — clear skies.
…Actually, it’s too sunny.
It hasn’t rained properly since around Golden Week, and the temperature is running pretty high.
となると気になるのが、野生の苔たち。
「いま山の苔、どうなってるんやろ？」
そんな疑問が湧いてきたので、今回は霧吹きを片手に近所の山へ。
Which naturally made me wonder about the wild moss out there.
“What’s happening to the mountain moss right now?”
That question led me to grab a spray bottle and head to the nearby mountain.
テーマは――
乾燥した苔は、水を与えるとどれくらい復活するのか！？
そしてついでに、
苔の名前も特定してやろう作戦
です（笑）

How much can dried-out moss recover when given water!?
And as a bonus goal,
Operation: Actually Identify the Moss Names
is also on the agenda. (lol)
まず山のふもとで発見！コンクリートの謎苔
First Discovery at the Mountain Base! Mystery Moss on Concrete
山のふもと、コンクリートの上で発見したこの苔。
This moss, discovered at the base of the mountain on concrete.
完全にカラッカラ。
もはや「苔」よりも「乾燥した何か」です。
ここへ霧吹きをシュッ。
Completely bone dry.
At this point it’s less “moss” and more “some dried-out thing.”
Give it a spritz from the spray bottle.
1分後――
One minute later —
うおぉぉ……。
黄緑色に戻り、葉が立ち上がってきました。
苔ってほんま、ゾンビみたいな生命力してます。
Whooaah…
The yellow-green color is back and the leaves are standing up.
Moss really does have zombie-like resilience.
さて問題は名前です。
Googleレンズ先生は「ヒツジゴケでは？」とのこと。
たしかに、岩やコンクリートに生える。乾燥に強い。
Now for the real question: the name.
Google Lens suggested “Hitsujigoke?”
It does grow on rocks and concrete. And it is drought-resistant.
ここまでは一致。
でも拡大すると、なんか違う。
ネットの画像より葉先が硬そうなんですよね。
So far so good.
But zoomed in, something feels off.
The leaf tips look stiffer than the images online.
図鑑にも載ってない。
クサゴケ？
ヒジキゴケ？
いや違う気もする。
Not in the field guide either.
Kusagoke?
Hijikigoke?
No, probably not those either.
結果――
わからん！
はい次！
Conclusion —
No idea!

ハイゴケ＆タチゴケ——乾燥に強いベテラン苔たち
Haigoke & Tachigoke — The Veteran Mosses That Laugh at Drought
山へ入ると、干からびたハイゴケ。
Further into the mountain — dried-out Haigoke.
でもこれは見慣れてるので即判定。
ハイゴケです。
今回は観察メインなので噴射なし（笑）
But I know this one well, so instant identification.
It’s Haigoke.
Just observing this time, so no spray. (lol)
以前も登場したタチゴケのコロニー。
A colony of Tachigoke I’ve spotted before.
乾燥してるのに、あんまり弱って見えません。
Even though it’s dry, it doesn’t look that weakened at all.
水を与えても――
And even after adding water —
……あんまり変わらん（笑）
どうやらタチゴケは、乾燥への耐性がかなり高そうです。
…Not much change. (lol)
It seems Tachigoke has remarkably high drought resistance.
あと、触ると気持ちいい。
重要です。
Also, it feels amazing to touch.
Very important.

でもこの界隈、
種類が多すぎてほんま難しい。

But in this category,
there are just too many species and it’s genuinely tough.

うーん……

でもアリが乗ってる写真、なんか好き。
苔の世界が急に巨大に見える。

これはハマキゴケっぽい！

This looks like Hamakigoke!
……と思ったら。
すぐ近くに別個体。
…Or so I thought.
Then I found another individual right nearby.
なんかサイズ違う。
水を与えると――
Seems like a different size.
Add water and —
え、こっちの方がハマキゴケっぽい。
もう何が何やら（笑）
Wait, this one looks more like Hamakigoke.
At this point I have no idea what’s what. (lol)
でも、
乾燥時と湿潤時で姿が激変する
これだけはハッキリわかりました。
But one thing I could say for certain:
dry vs. wet — the transformation is dramatic
That much was crystal clear.
シノブゴケ＆岩の謎苔2種——Google先生、全部アオギヌゴケって言いません？

岩の上で発見したシノブゴケ。
Shinobugoke found on a rock.
乾燥すると、完全に「使い古した雑巾」
みたいになります。
When dry, it looks exactly like “a worn-out old rag”
— there’s really no other way to describe it.
しかし水を与えると――
But add water and —
葉が立ち上がってきた！
これが面白いんですよねぇ。
苔って、死んでるように見えて、
実は「休眠モード」みたいになってる種類が多いんです。
The leaves are standing up!
This is what makes it so fascinating.
Moss looks dead,
but many species are actually just in “sleep mode.”
別の岩に2種類の干からび苔。

こちらはおそらくコバノスナゴケ。
This one is probably Kobanosunaoke.
濡らすと――

美しい。
もうこれはミニチュア森林。
Beautiful.
It’s basically a miniature forest.
さらに石垣側面では――
And on the side of a stone wall —
葉がドリルみたいにねじれてます。
The leaves are twisted like a drill.

いや美しすぎるやろ（笑）
Okay, this is too beautiful. (lol)
これはもう、
「苔にハマる瞬間」って感じです。
This is exactly
what “the moment you fall for moss” feels like.
帰り道の脇で発見。
Found this one on the side of the path heading home.
ユミダイゴケ？
乾燥してたので水を与えます。
Yumidaigoke?
It was dried out, so I gave it some water.
……あんまり変わらん（笑）
でも、変化が少ない苔もいるってのが面白い。
…Not much change. (lol)
But that’s interesting in itself — some mosses barely change at all.
まとめ——苔は変身する。でも名前はわからん。それでいい。
Wrap-Up — Moss Transforms. Names Are Hard. And That’s Okay.
今回は、乾燥した苔はどれだけ姿を変えるのか？
苔の名前を特定できるのか？
This time I set out to answer: how much does dried moss actually change?
And can I actually identify what they’re called?
この2つをテーマに観察してみました。
結果としては――
苔はめちゃくちゃ変身する。
でも名前はめちゃくちゃ難しい。
でした（笑）
I went out with those two questions in mind.
And the answer was —
Moss transforms like crazy. But identifying the names is crazy hard.
That was the conclusion. (lol)
それでも、
乾燥して縮こまり、
水を得てゆっくり開いていく姿を見ていると、
「あぁ、生きてるんやなぁ」って実感します。
Even so,
watching it shrink in the dry heat
and then slowly open up when given water —
you can’t help feeling, “Ah, it’s alive.”
普段はただの”緑の汚れ”みたいに見えていたものが、
じつは環境に合わせて姿を変える、小さな生命体。
苔観察って、
名前を当てるゲームでもあり、
変化を楽しむ遊びでもあるのかもしれませんね😆
What normally looks like just “green grime”
is actually a tiny living creature that adapts its form to the environment.
Moss observation —
it’s a game of guessing names,
but also a game of enjoying the change. 😆
