今回は、ボール型のガラス容器を使って、苔テラリウムを作っていきます。
Today we’re making a moss terrarium using a ball-shaped glass container.
主役は、こちらの流木
ただの流木と言えばただの流木なんですが、これがなかなかクセの強い形をしています。
The star of the show is this piece of driftwood. It may just be driftwood, but it has quite a distinctive, characterful shape.
枝が上に伸びていたり、横にうねっていたり、まるで
「わし、森の長老ですけど？」
みたいな顔しています。
Branches reaching upward, curves sprawling sideways — it’s giving off major “I am the Elder of the Forest” energy.
こういう素材を見つけた瞬間が、苔テラリウム作りで一番テンションが上がるところですね。
完成形をまだ何も作っていないのに、頭の中ではもう森が完成しています。
作っている本人だけ、すでに名作の予感でニヤニヤしています。
Finding a piece of material like this is the most exciting moment in moss terrarium making. Nothing has been built yet, but the forest is already complete in my head — and I’m the only one grinning at the feeling that this is going to be a masterpiece.
今回は最後に小さなウサギのフィギュアも添えて、ちょっとかわいい世界観に仕上げていきます。
ちなみに苔を植え付けている様子はタイムラプスでも撮影しました。
At the end, I’ll also add a small rabbit figurine to give it a cute, storybook feel. I also filmed the moss planting process as a time-lapse.
苔を黙々と植えているだけの動画ですが、みているとだんだん
「この人、何と戦ってるんやろ？」
という気持ちになれます。
もちろん戦っている相手は、ソイルとピンセットです。
It’s just a video of someone quietly planting moss, but as you watch it you start to think, “What exactly is this person battling?” The answer, of course, is soil and tweezers.
素材のレイアウトから——完成形はここで決まる
Starting with Layout — The Final Look Is Decided Right Here
それでは作成過程です。
ボール型のガラス容器、流木、石、流木のかけら。
Let’s walk through the creation process. Ball-shaped glass container, driftwood, stones, and small pieces of driftwood.
この時点ではまだ、ただの素材を並べただけです。
と言うより、ここがめちゃくちゃ大事です。
At this stage it’s just materials laid out. But actually, this stage is incredibly important.
どの流木を主役にするか。
どの向きで置くか。
石をどこに添えるか。
手前を開けるのか、奥を盛るのか。
Which driftwood will be the main focus? Which direction will it face? Where will the stones go? Should the front be open or the back built up?
この段階で、完成後の雰囲気がかなり決まります。
料理で言うと、まだ包丁すら握っていないのに
「今日は勝ったな」
と思っている時間です。
This stage largely determines the final atmosphere. In cooking terms, it’s that moment when you haven’t even picked up a knife yet, but you’re already thinking “I’ve got this one in the bag.”
まず、ガラス容器に流木を入れてみます。
First, I place the driftwood inside the glass container.
ここではまだ固定はせず、とにかく角度を探ります。
流木って、向きを少し変えるだけでぜんぜん表情が変わるんですよね。
上に伸ばすと力強い感じ。
寝かせると倒木っぽい自然感。
斜めにすると、動きが出てちょっとドラマチック。
No fixing in place yet — just exploring angles. Driftwood is fascinating like that; a slight change in direction completely transforms its expression. Standing upright feels powerful. Laid flat feels like a naturally fallen tree. At an angle, it gains movement and becomes a bit dramatic.
今回はこの流木の存在感を生かしたいので、少し立ち上がるような配置にしてみました。
奥に苔の斜面を作って、手前には白砂のスペースを作るイメージです。
For this piece, I wanted to let the driftwood’s presence shine, so I went with a slightly upright placement. The vision: a mossy slope in the back, and a white sand area at the front.
つまり今回のテーマは
「苔の森と、流木の古道」
みたいな感じです。
In other words, today’s theme is something like “A Moss Forest and an Ancient Driftwood Path.”
今、勝手に言いました。
でも作りながらテーマが生まれるのも、苔テラリウムの面白いところです。
I just decided that on the spot. But having a theme emerge in the middle of making something — that’s part of what makes moss terrariums so fun.
流木を固定して地形を作る——土台作りは体育会系
Securing the Driftwood and Shaping the Terrain — Foundation Work Is Surprisingly Athletic
流木の位置が決まったら、ソイルを入れて固定していきます。
Once the driftwood is positioned, I add soil and secure it in place.
流木はただ置くだけだとグラグラするので、根元をソイルで押さえながら固定します。
ここで少し水を加えて、ソイルを固めていきます。
この作業、地味に見えますがかなり重要です。
ここか甘いと、後で苔を植えている最中に流木が動きます。
Driftwood placed on its own will wobble, so I pack soil around the base to hold it in place. A little water is added to firm things up. This step looks mundane but it’s extremely important. Skimp here and the driftwood will shift while you’re planting the moss later.
そして、流木が動くと、心も動きます。
悪い意味で。
「さっきの完璧な角度はどこへ行ったんや！」
と、カラス容器の中で小さな災害が起きます。
なので、土台作りはしっかりめに。
苔テラリウムは、見た目は癒し系ですが、土台作りは割と体育会系です。
When the driftwood moves, your heart moves too — and not in a good way. “Where did that perfect angle just go?!” A small disaster unfolds inside the glass. So build the foundation firmly. Moss terrariums may look calm and therapeutic, but the foundation work is surprisingly athletic.
次に、終僕の奥側にソイルを斜めに入れていきます。
Next, I add soil at an angle to the back of the container to create a slope.
ここで平らにしてしまうと、完成した時に少し単調になります。
なので、奥を高く、手前を低く。
小さな容器の中でも高低差を作ると、一気に景色っぽくなります。
Keeping it flat makes the finished piece feel monotonous. So I build higher in the back and lower at the front. Even in a small container, adding elevation instantly transforms it into something that feels like a real landscape.
山道でも、平たんな道よりも少し起伏がある方が雰囲気ありますよね。
苔テラリウムも同じです。
ただ苔を敷くだけではなく、少し傾斜をつくることで
「そこに森がある感」が出てきます。
On a mountain path, a little variation in the terrain feels more atmospheric than a flat road, right? The same applies to moss terrariums. Rather than just laying moss flat, adding a slight slope creates that feeling of “yes, a real forest exists here.”

Here’s what it looks like from the side.
ガラス越しに見ると、ソイルが流木の根元を包み込んでいて、だんだん地形っぽくなってきました。
Through the glass, you can see the soil wrapping around the base of the driftwood — it’s starting to look like actual terrain.
個年からもう、作っている本人の脳内では
「森、出てきたな…」
と、急に職人顔になります。
At this point, my inner monologue has shifted to “…the forest is emerging,” and my face has quietly taken on the expression of a seasoned craftsman.
まだ苔は植えていません。
でも気持ちはもう森の管理人です。
The moss hasn’t been planted yet. But mentally, I’m already the forest ranger.
続いて、石と流木のかけらを配置します。
Next, I arrange the stones and small pieces of driftwood.
今回使った石は、少し白っぽい色のある石です。
この石を入れることで、苔の緑と流木の茶色だけではなく、少し明るいアクセントが入ります。
テラリウムって、小さな世界なので色のバランスがけっこう大事なんですよね。
茶色と緑だけでも自然でいいんですが、そこに白っぽい意志が入ると、景色に”抜け”ができます。
The stones I used have a slightly white tone. Adding them brings a brighter accent beyond just the green of the moss and the brown of the driftwood. Color balance matters quite a bit in a terrarium since it’s such a small world. Brown and green alone look natural and lovely, but a lighter stone creates a visual “breath” in the composition.
後、小さな流木のかけらも添えることで、主役の大きな流木だけがドーンと目立つのではなく、自然になじんでくれます。
Adding small pieces of driftwood also helps — rather than having the main driftwood loom there dramatically alone, everything blends together more naturally.
人間社会で言うところの名脇役です。
主役を立てる石。
主役を立てる流木のかけら。
苔テラリウム界にも、ちゃんとチームプレイがあります。
In human terms: outstanding supporting actors. Stones that make the lead shine. Driftwood fragments that let the star stand out. Even in the world of moss terrariums, teamwork exists.
さらに、流木の奥側の斜面をせり上げるために、造形用のソイルを使ってガラス容器の側面に張り上げていきます。
Next, I use modeling soil to build up the slope at the back of the driftwood, pressing it up along the inside of the glass.
ここ、かなり楽しいところです。
ただの土台から、だんだん地形になっていく感じ。
まるで、ガラス容器の中で小さな崖を作っているような感覚です。
This part is really fun. Watching a plain foundation gradually become terrain — it feels like sculpting a tiny cliff inside a glass container.
ただし、調子のって盛りすぎると、崖崩壊の危険があります。
苔テラリウム作りは、癒しの趣味に見えて、途中はけっこう泥試合です。
でもこの泥試合の先に、あの美しい緑の世界が待っています。
だからやめられないんですよね。
That said, get carried away and pile it up too much, and the cliff risks collapsing. Moss terrarium making might look like a calming hobby, but midway through it can get pretty messy. Still, that beautiful green world awaits on the other side of the struggle. That’s why you can’t stop.
いよいよ苔の出番——茶色い更地が一瞬で森になる
Finally, the Moss — A Brown Wasteland Becomes a Forest in an Instant
いよいよ苔の出番です。
ホソバオキナゴケをメインに植え付けていきました。
白いカラーサンドでワンポイント入れています。
Finally, it’s time for the moss. I planted Hosobaokinagoke (white cushion moss) as the main plant, with a touch of white colored sand for accent.
この瞬間、世界が一気に変わります。
さっきまで茶色かった容器の中が、いきなり森になります。
苔の力、すごいです。
いうなれば、茶色い更地に芝生を貼った瞬間の感動。
This is the moment the whole world changes. What was brown inside the container instantly becomes a forest. The power of moss is incredible — it’s like the feeling of laying turf on bare brown earth and watching it transform in an instant.
いや、芝生と言うより、もっとふわふわした森ですね。
ホソバオキナゴケは、ふんわしたボリューム感があって、植えるだけでかなり雰囲気が出ます。
Actually, calling it “turf” undersells it — it’s more like a fluffy forest. Hosobaokinagoke has a wonderfully soft, voluminous texture, and just planting it creates an incredible atmosphere.
今回は奥の斜面にしっかり植えることで、背景に森の密度が生まれました。
横から見るとこんな感じです。
By planting it densely on the back slope, I created a sense of forest density in the background. Here’s what it looks like from the side.
ガラス越しに見ると、斜面に沿って苔が広がっていて、流木の存在感もかなりいい感じです。
ここまでくると、もう完成が見えてきます。
Through the glass, the moss spreads along the slope and the driftwood looks stunning. At this point, you can already see the finished piece taking shape.
作業してる本人のテンションも、だいたいこのへんでピークです。
「これは売れるんちゃう？」
「いや、手放したくないな」
「でも置く場所ないな」
この3つの感情がぐるぐる回り始めます。
My own excitement peaks around this point too. “Could I sell this?” “No, I don’t want to let it go.” “But I don’t have anywhere to put it.” These three thoughts start cycling on repeat.
複数の苔で細部を演出する——それぞれに役割がある
Staging the Details with Multiple Mosses — Each One Has a Role
ホソバオキナゴケで全体のベースができたら、さらにヒノキゴケ、コツボゴケ（直立茎）、タマゴケを使って装飾していきます。
Once the Hosobaokinagoke forms the overall base, I add Hinokigoke (cypress moss), Kotsubogoke (upright type), and Tamagoke (bead moss) for decoration.
ここからは、完全に小さな世界の演出タイムです。
From here, it’s all about staging a tiny world.
りゅぼく根元や隙間に、少しづつちがう苔を足していきます。
ヒノキゴケは、ピンと立つ姿がカッコいい。
小さな針葉樹みたいで、森感を出すのにめちゃくちゃ良いです。
I add different mosses bit by bit around the base of the driftwood and in the gaps. Hinokigoke stands upright and looks striking — like a tiny conifer, it’s perfect for creating that forest atmosphere.
コツボゴケは、しっとりとした緑が入って、自然な温度感が出ます。
タマゴケは、見た目の可愛さ担当。
苔にもちゃんと役割があります。
Kotsubogoke brings a moist, lush green that adds natural warmth. Tamagoke handles the cuteness department. Each moss has its own role to play.
森の背景担当。
湿度演出担当。
可愛さ担当。
Background forest creator. Humidity atmosphere builder. Cuteness provider.
そして流木は完全に主役。
なんなら、ちょっと偉そうです。
And the driftwood is the undisputed star. Honestly, it’s acting a little full of itself.
ウサギを置いた瞬間、物語が生まれた
The Moment the Rabbit Was Placed, a Story Was Born
そして、小さなウサギのフィギュア
And then — the small rabbit figurine.
はい、完成です。
And it’s done.
これはもう反則です。
ウサギを置いた瞬間、ただの苔テラリウムから「物語のある苔テラリウム」に変わりました。
This is basically cheating. The moment I placed the rabbit, it stopped being “a moss terrarium” and became “a moss terrarium with a story.”
白いウサギが、苔の森の中でこちらを見上げています。
まるで
「ここ、住んでもいいですか？」
と言っているようです。
もちろん許可します。
むしろ家賃いりません。
苔の森で好きに暮らしてください。
The white rabbit is looking up at me from inside the moss forest. It looks like it’s saying, “Is it alright if I live here?” Of course you may. No rent required. Make yourself at home in this moss forest.
流木のトンネル、苔の斜面、白砂の道、小さな石。
全部そろったことで、ガラス容器の中に一つの景色ができました。
上から見ると、苔の森の中に小道があり、流木が大きな倒木のように横たわっています。
A driftwood tunnel, a mossy slope, a white sand path, small stones. All the pieces came together to create a single landscape inside the glass. Looking from above, there’s a path through the moss forest, and the driftwood lies like a massive fallen tree.
横から見ると、苔の斜面と流木の立体感がしっかり見えて、奥行きも感じられます。
そして近くで見ると、ウサギがちゃんと森の住人になっています。
From the side, the mossy slope and the three-dimensional presence of the driftwood are clearly visible, and you can feel the depth. Up close, the rabbit has fully settled in as a forest resident.
これはかわいい。
これはずるい。
最後にフィギュアを置くだけで、世界観が一気に完成するんですよね。
This is adorable. This is absolutely unfair. Just placing a figurine at the end and the whole world of it clicks into place instantly.
今回作ってみて、やっぱり流木の存在感は大きいと感じました。
苔だけでも十分綺麗ですが、流木があることで一気に景色にストーリーが出ます。
特に今回のように形に癖のある流木は、配置するだけで主役になります。
Making this confirmed just how powerful driftwood’s presence is. Moss alone is beautiful enough, but adding driftwood instantly gives the landscape a story. Especially with a characterful piece like this one — just placing it makes it the star.
そこにソイルで高低差をつけて、石や流木のかけらで自然感を出して、苔の森を作る。
最後にフィギュアを置けば、小さな物語の完成です。
Add elevation changes with soil, bring in natural feeling with stones and driftwood fragments, create a moss forest. Place a figurine at the end, and a tiny story is complete.
苔テラリウムって、ただ植物を植えるだけじゃなくて、
ガラス容器の中に”自分だけの景色”を作る遊び
なんやなと改めて思いました。
I was reminded once again that moss terrariums aren’t just about planting plants — they’re about creating “your own personal landscape” inside a glass container.
しかも作って終わりではありません。
ここから苔がなじんだり、少しずつ成長したり、湿度によって表情が変わったりします。
つまり完成した瞬間がゴールではなく、ここからが本番です。
ウサギからしたら、引っ越し初日です。
これからこの森でどう暮らしていくのか、しっかり見守っていきたいと思います。
And it doesn’t end once it’s made. From here, the moss will settle in, grow little by little, and change its expression with humidity. The moment of completion isn’t the goal — this is where it really begins. For the rabbit, it’s moving day. I’m looking forward to watching how it makes itself at home in this little forest.
まとめ——小さなガラス容器に、自分だけの景色を
Wrap-Up — Creating Your Own Personal Landscape in a Small Glass Container
今回は、ボール型のガラス容器に流木、石、苔を使って、小さな森のような苔テラリウムを作ってみました。
最初は、ただの流木と石とガラス容器。
でも、ソイルで地形を作り、苔を植え、最後にウサギを添えると、そこにはちゃんと小さな世界が生まれました。
For this piece, I used a ball-shaped glass container, driftwood, stones, and moss to create a small-forest moss terrarium. It started as just driftwood, stones, and a glass container. But by shaping the terrain with soil, planting the moss, and finally adding the rabbit, a proper little world was born.
苔テラリウムの面白いところは、正解がないところです。
どこの流木を置くか。
どこを山にするか。
どこに道を作るか。
どんな苔を植えるか。
全部、自分の感覚で決めていい。
失敗しても、それすら味になります。
むしろ、ちょっと予定外の方が自然っぽく見えたりします。
自然界なんて、だいたい予定外でできていますからね。
What makes moss terrariums so interesting is that there’s no right answer. Which driftwood to use. Where to build the mountain. Where to make the path. What moss to plant. All of it is decided by your own sense and intuition. Even mistakes just add character. A little unplanned is often what makes it look more natural — after all, nature itself is mostly unplanned.
最後にウサギを置いたことで、今回の作品は一気にやさしい雰囲気になりました。
流木の迫力。
苔の生命感。
白砂の明るさ。
そして、ウサギの圧倒的居候感。
Placing the rabbit at the end instantly softened the whole atmosphere of this piece. The driftwood’s bold presence. The vitality of the moss. The brightness of the white sand. And the rabbit’s overwhelming “freeloading resident” energy.
小さなガラス容器の中に、ちゃんと森ができました。
そして気づけば、作っているこっちが一番癒されていました。
苔テラリウム、やっぱり楽しいです。
A proper forest appeared inside a small glass container. And somehow, by the end, I was the one feeling the most at peace. Moss terrariums really are wonderful.
流木ひとつで景色が生まれ、苔ひとつで森になる。
そしてウサギを置いた瞬間、そこはもう”物語”になる。
One piece of driftwood creates a landscape. One covering of moss becomes a forest. And the moment a rabbit is placed there, it becomes a story.
次はこの小さな森が、どんな表情に育っていくのか。
しばらく、ウサギの大家として見守っていきたいと思います。
