Two Months Later — The Fern Turned Out to Be the Real Diva
今回は、初めて作った溶岩石に苔を植え付けた作品を2つ紹介します。
しかも初挑戦にもかかわらず、いきなり思ったんです。
Today I’m introducing two pieces I made by attaching moss to lava rock for the very first time. And despite being a complete beginner, I immediately had a thought.
「苔だけでもええけど……シダも一緒に着生させたら、めちゃくちゃカッコよくない？」
はい、出ました。
初心者あるある。
できるかどうかより、カッコいいかどうかで判断するやつ。
“Moss alone is fine, but… wouldn’t it look incredible if I added a fern too?” And there it is. Classic beginner move — deciding based on how cool it looks rather than whether it’s actually doable.
ということで、苔だけでなくシダまで一緒に溶岩石へ巻きつけてみました。
溶岩石にしっかり着生するまで、だいたい2か月ほど。
作った直後と2か月後で、どれくらい変化が出るのか見ていきます。
So I went ahead and attached not just moss, but ferns too, onto the lava rock. It takes about 2 months to properly take hold. Let’s see how much things changed from right after making them to 2 months later.

苔も人間も、照明ひとつでだいぶ印象変わります。

1つ目の作品：苔とシダのミニジャングル計画
Piece #1: The Mini Jungle Plan — Moss & Fern on Lava Rock
まずはこちらの作品。
First up, this piece.
使ったのは、ハイゴケ・コバノチョウチンゴケ・ホソバオキナゴケ・シダ
です。
The plants used were Haigoke (fern moss), Kobanochouchingoke (lantern moss), Hosobaokinagoke (white cushion moss), and a fern.
作ったばかりの頃は、黒い溶岩石の上に緑がちょこんと乗っている感じ。
「これから小さな森になりますよ」
みたいな雰囲気で、かなり期待感があります。
特にシダが入ると、一気に”山感”が出ますね。
苔だけだと地面の世界。
シダが入ると、急に立体感が出て、
「あ、ここ森ですね」
ってなります。
Right after making it, the green just sat neatly on top of the black lava rock — it had a “this is going to become a little forest someday” kind of energy. Adding a fern instantly gives it that mountain feel. With just moss, it’s a ground-level world. Add a fern, and suddenly there’s depth: “Oh, this is actually a forest.”
2か月後：主役、シダに奪われる
Two Months Later: The Fern Steals the Show
そして2か月後。
And here we are, two months later.
思っていた以上に、シダの成長が早くどんどん姿が変わります。
The fern grew much faster than expected, changing its appearance dramatically.
苔たちはゆっくり、じわじわ、静かに変化していく感じなんですが、シダは違います。
「ほな、上行きますわ」みたいな勢いで、どんどん伸びます。
いや、君。
今回の主役は苔やで？
The mosses change slowly, gradually, quietly — but the fern is a different story. It shoots upward like it’s saying, “Alright, I’m heading up.” Hey, fern. The star of this show is supposed to be the moss, okay?
でも写真で見ると、シダが伸びることで作品全体に動きが出て、かなり自然感が増しました。
特に溶岩石の黒と、シダの明るい緑のコントラストがめちゃくちゃいい。
黒い岩に緑が乗るだけで、なんでこんなに生命感が出るんでしょうね。
But looking at the photos, the fern’s growth adds movement to the whole piece and makes it feel much more natural. The contrast between the black lava rock and the bright green of the fern is stunning. It’s amazing how just having green on black rock creates such a sense of life.
苔の成長はゆっくり。でもハイゴケは元気
Moss Growth Is Slow — But Haigoke Is Thriving
苔の成長は、やっぱりゆっくりです。
Moss growth is, as always, slow.
「昨日より伸びた！」みたいな派手な変化は少ないですが、よく見るとちゃんと変わっています。
There aren’t many dramatic “it grew overnight!” moments, but looking closely, it really has changed.
中でもハイゴケは強いですね。
Haigoke in particular is impressively resilient.
溶岩石の表面を這うように伸びていて、
“俺がこの岩を緑化する”
という強い意志を感じます。
苔界の開拓者です。
It creeps across the lava rock surface with what feels like fierce determination: “I will make this rock green.” The pioneer of the moss world.
そして近くで見ると、溶岩石の細かい穴や凹凸に苔が入り込んでいて、かなりいい雰囲気。
こういうのを見ると、「溶岩石って、苔を着生させる素材としてやっぱりおもしろいな」
と感じます。
Up close, you can see the moss nestling into the tiny holes and grooves of the lava rock — it looks amazing. Seeing this makes me think, “Lava rock really is a fascinating material for moss attachment.”
まさかの新シダ出現
A Surprise: An Unexpected New Fern Appears
そして、面白かったのがこれ。
And this was something really interesting.
最初にはなかった種類の違うシダっぽいものが出てきました。
根っこか地下茎のようなものが残っていたのか、
それとも素材に混ざっていたのか。
A fern-like plant that wasn’t there at the beginning appeared. Maybe a root or rhizome was left behind, or perhaps it came mixed in with the materials.
気づいたら、
「どうも、新入りです」
みたいな顔して出てきました。
At some point it just showed up, looking like it was introducing itself: “Hello, I’m new here.”
苔テラリウムって、こういう予想外があるから面白いですね。
植えたものだけが育つんじゃなくて、
思ってもいないものが出てくる。
まるで育成ゲームの隠しキャラです。
This is what makes moss terrariums so interesting — not just what you planted grows, but unexpected things appear too. It’s like a hidden character in a nature-growing game.
2つ目の作品：シダにょーん型溶岩石
Piece #2: The Reaching-for-the-Sky Fern Lava Rock
続いて2つ目の作品です。
Next, the second piece.
こちらもシダがにょーんと伸びていて、かなりカッコいい。
In this one too, the fern stretches upward beautifully — it looks really cool.
使用した苔は、ヒノキゴケ・コバノチョウチンゴケ・ホソバオキナゴケです。
溶岩石のくぼみに合わせて苔を植え付けて、自然に生えているような雰囲気を狙いました。
The mosses used were Hinokigoke (cypress moss), Kobanochouchingoke (lantern moss), and Hosobaokinagoke (white cushion moss). I planted them in the hollows of the lava rock, aiming for a naturally-growing feel.
この時点ではかなりいい感じ。
黒い溶岩石に、ふわっとした苔。
そこから伸びるシダ。
At this point it looked really good. Soft moss on black lava rock. A fern reaching upward from it.
これはもう、“小さな崖に生えた森”です。
This was nothing less than “a tiny forest growing on a cliff face.”
2か月後：シダ、ちょっと危ない
Two Months Later: The Fern Is Looking a Little Rough
そして2か月後。
And two months later.
こちらの作品は、シダが少し枯れそうな雰囲気になっていました。
葉先が傷んできたり、全体的に元気がなくなったり。
In this piece, the fern was starting to look a little unhappy. Leaf tips were getting damaged, and overall it seemed to be losing its vitality.
最初はあんなに堂々としていたのに、
気づけば少しへにゃっとしています。
It started out so bold and upright, but somehow it ended up looking a bit wilted.
シダ、思ったより繊細。
見た目はワイルドなのに、育てるとなると急にデリケート。
苔より主張してくるくせに、メンタルは意外と弱いタイプです。
Ferns are more delicate than I expected. They look wild, but when it comes to actually growing them, they suddenly turn fragile. They demand more attention than moss, yet their inner resolve is surprisingly brittle.
ヒノキゴケは茶色くなったけど、新芽の気配も？
Hinokigoke Turned Brown — But New Shoots Might Be on the Way
寄って見てみると、ヒノキゴケも一部茶色くなっていました。
Looking up close, part of the Hinokigoke had turned brown too.
正直、「あれ？これは失敗か？」と思い、先端をカットしてたのですが、
よく見ると横から新しい芽のようなものが出ているようにも見えます。
このへんが苔の難しいところであり、面白いところ。
Honestly, I thought “Wait, is this a failure?” and trimmed the tips — but looking closely, it seems like new shoots might be coming out from the sides. This is both the tricky and the fascinating part of growing moss.
完全にダメになったように見えても、
実はどこかで生きていることがあります。
見た目だけで判断すると、「枯れた！」
となるんですが、しばらく様子を見ると、
「いや、まだ戦ってたんかい」となることもあります。
Even when it looks completely done for, it’s sometimes still alive somewhere. Judging by looks alone, you’d say “It’s dead!” — but give it time and you might find yourself thinking, “Oh wow, it was still fighting.”
苔、無言で粘ります。
Moss holds on in silence.
裏側のコバノチョウチンゴケにも変化あり
Changes Spotted on the Back-Side Kobanochouchin Moss Too
裏側に配置したコバノチョウチンゴケにも、小さい芽のようなものが出てきていました。
The Kobanochouchingoke placed on the back side also had what appeared to be tiny new shoots emerging.
派手さはないです。
でも、こういう小さな変化こそ苔育成の醍醐味ですね。
写真を撮って、あとから見返して、
「あれ？ここ増えてない？」と気づく瞬間。
これが楽しい。
Nothing flashy. But these small changes are exactly what makes growing moss so rewarding. Taking photos, looking back at them later, and noticing “Wait — didn’t this area grow?” That moment of discovery is the joy of it.
育成している時は変化が遅く感じるけど、写真で比べるとちゃんと進んでいる。
苔は、毎日見ると無言。
でも2か月後に見返すと、ちゃんと返事してくれます。
It feels slow while you’re growing it, but comparing photos shows real progress. Moss is silent when you check on it every day. But look back two months later, and it finally gives you a reply.
今回わかったこと：シダはかっこいい。でも難しい。
What I Learned: Ferns Look Amazing. But They’re Tricky.
今回、溶岩石にシダと苔を一緒に着生させてみて、よくわかりました。
シダは難しい。
かっこいいんです。
めちゃくちゃかっこいい。
After trying to attach both ferns and moss to lava rock together this time, one thing became very clear: ferns are difficult. They look amazing. Genuinely, incredibly amazing.
シダがあるだけで、作品に高さが出て、自然感も増します。
まるで小さな山の一部を切り取ったような雰囲気になります。
Just having a fern adds height to the piece and makes it feel much more natural — like a small piece of a real mountain has been captured.
でも問題もあります。
シダは新芽が出ると、想像以上に伸びます。
容器に入れて育てる場合、天井にぶち当たる可能性があります。
But there are challenges. When new fronds emerge, they grow far more than you’d expect. If you’re growing them in a container, there’s a real chance they’ll hit the ceiling.
しかも油断すると、すぐにへにゃっとします。
And the moment you let your guard down, they go limp.
苔は栄養が少なくても育てやすいですが、
シダの場合は養分や根の環境、水分バランスも気になります。
Moss is easy to grow with minimal nutrients, but with ferns you start worrying about nutrition, root conditions, and moisture balance.
つまり、
苔は静かな職人。
シダは映えるけど気分屋。
そんな印象です。
In short: moss is a quiet craftsman. Ferns are photogenic but moody. That’s the impression I got.
まとめ：溶岩石×苔は最高。でもシダは要研究。
Wrap-Up: Lava Rock × Moss Is Great. But Ferns Need More Study.
今回の結果としては、溶岩石に苔を着生させるのは、かなり面白いです。
The conclusion from this experiment: attaching moss to lava rock is genuinely fascinating.
黒い岩肌に緑が広がっていく感じは、見ていて飽きません。
特にハイゴケのように伸びていくタイプは、変化がわかりやすくて育成記録にも向いていると思います。
Watching green spread across the black rock surface never gets old. Spreading types like Haigoke show clear visible change and are well-suited for growth documentation.
一方で、シダは作品としてはめちゃくちゃ映えますが、育成はなかなか難しい。
Ferns, on the other hand, look spectacular as part of a piece, but growing them is genuinely challenging.
伸びすぎる。
枯れやすい。
へにゃる。
容器にぶつかる。
They grow too tall. They wilt easily. They go limp. They hit the container ceiling.
なかなかクセが強いです。
でも、だからこそ面白い。
思い通りにいかないから、次はどうしようと考える。
苔だけじゃなく、シダも含めて小さな自然を作るなら、まだまだ研究の余地がありそうです。
They’re quite the handful. But that’s exactly what makes them interesting. When things don’t go as planned, it makes you think about what to try next time. If you want to create a little piece of nature with both moss and ferns, there’s still plenty left to figure out.
ということで今回の結論。
And so, here’s the conclusion from today.
溶岩石に苔は合う。
シダは映える。
でもシダは、こちらの予定を一切聞いてくれない。
Moss and lava rock go perfectly together. Ferns look stunning. But ferns absolutely refuse to follow your plans.
そして最後にひとこと。
And one last word.
苔はゆっくり育つ。
シダは勝手に伸びる。
育成者だけが、毎日そっと振り回される。
Moss grows slowly. Ferns grow however they want. And the grower is the only one getting quietly pushed around every single day.
