Unexpected Discovery on the Way: Jingasa-goke (Conocephalum)

こんなところに… ジンガサゴケかな？
笠がキノコみたいで可愛い。
春しか笠は見ることができないのかな？
この「ジンガサ」って漢字では「 陣笠 」と書いて戦国時代の武将がかぶる兜のことだそうです。

The cap looks like a mushroom, so cute.
I wonder if you can only see the caps in spring?
Apparently, the kanji for “Jingasa” is written as “軍笠” and refers to the helmet worn by samurai warriors during the Sengoku period.

見回してみても着床してるのはここだけみたい
近縁種にヒロクチゴケもいるらしいけど、どうなんだろう？
蒴の釜が外れると大きな口を開くんだって！
Looking around, it seems this is the only place where it’s attached.
Apparently, there’s a closely related species called Hypnum cupressiforme, but I wonder how it compares?
I heard that when the capsule detaches, it opens up into a big mouth!

This is the entrance to the mountain.
一昨日少し雨降ったけど湿気とかはどうなんだろう？
それにしても暑いです。
長袖では汗かきます。
It rained a little the day before yesterday, but I wonder how the humidity is now?

竹が旬と書いて「 筍 」すばらしいネーミングですね。
The bamboo shoots are sprouting up! (lol)
The word “takenoko” (筍) is written with the characters for “bamboo” and “season.” What a wonderful name!

ちょっと乾燥してしまってますが、トサカホウオウゴケっぽいです。

足元にはタイ類の苔がわんさと生えてます。
There’s a huge amount of Thai moss growing at your feet.
表面がつるつるしてるからなぁ。
チョウチンゴケかな？タイ類じゃないけど・・・
It’s got a really smooth surface.
Could it be Lantern Moss? It’s not a type of Thais, though…
すばらしいオブジェクトになっています。

ホウオウゴケのエリアを発見
Discovering the Phoenix Moss (Ho-o-goke) Area
ホウホウゴケのエリアです。
This is an area of Houhougoke moss.
真ん中の岩に生えているのがホウホウゴケです。
The moss growing on the rock in the middle is Houhougoke.
きっとナガサキホウホウゴケでしょう。
ナガサキと言っても新種発見時が長崎だったそうで、ここは本州です（笑）
鳳凰の羽に似てるからホウオウゴケだそうです。
雨で潤うとすごいきれいな苔です。
It’s probably Nagasaki phoenix.
Even though it’s called Nagasaki, apparently the new species was discovered in Nagasaki, but this is on Honshu (lol).
It’s called phoenix moss because it resembles a phoenix’s feather.
It’s a really beautiful moss when it’s moistened by rain.
足元に見えてきた！美しいシノブゴケ
Beautiful Thuidium Moss Appearing at Our Feet
足元に見えてきたのはシノブゴケです。
What I can see at my feet is moss called Davallia mariesii.
葉がほんと美しい形しています。
シダ植物の「シノブ」に似ていることからシノブゴケだそうで、今度その「シノブ」と言うシダも探してみます。
The leaves have a truly beautiful shape.
Apparently, it’s called “Shinobu moss” because it resembles the fern “Shinobu,” so I’ll try to find that fern next time.
桜の花びらを受け止めたコツボゴケ
Plagiomnium Moss Catching Fallen Cherry Blossom Petals
散った桜の花を下で受け止めたのは、コツボゴケと、一緒に生えている苔はなんだろう？
What kind of moss is growing alongside the moss that caught the fallen cherry blossoms below?
コツボゴケはどこでも生息しているけど、透き通った葉をつけるとてもきれいな苔です。
直立型なのでテラリウムにもピッタリ。
While Hypnum cupressiforme grows almost everywhere, it’s a very beautiful moss with translucent leaves.
Its upright growth habit makes it perfect for terrariums.
最後はハイゴケとスナゴケで締めくくり

これはハイゴケかな。
乾燥してるけどモフモフです。
This looks like Hypnum moss.
It’s dry, but very fluffy.
石の上でモフモフしてました。
It was snuggling up on a rock.
最後はスナゴケたちと紅葉の苗木です。
Finally, here are some sand mosses and a maple tree sapling.
今日も自然の苔たちに癒されました。
I was soothed by the natural moss again today.
