今回は、山で採取してきた”名前のわからない苔”2種類を使って、
流木に撒きゴケして着生させてみようという実験です。
This time, I’m using two types of moss I collected from the mountain — both with unknown names —
to try a “makigoke” (scatter-and-attach) experiment on a piece of driftwood.
苔好きあるあるなんですが、
「名前は知らん。でも好き。」
これ、めちゃくちゃ多いです（笑）
This is such a classic thing among moss lovers:
“I don’t know the name. But I love it.”
So many people feel this way. (lol)
山で採取してきた謎苔2種類を紹介
Introducing the 2 Mystery Moss Types I Collected From the Mountain
山で見つけた苔たち
まずはこちら。
The moss I found in the mountain —
first up, have a look at this one.
朽ち木にびっしり着いていた小さな苔。
近くで見ると繊細でかなりキレイなんですが、小さすぎて種類は完全に迷子です（笑）
A tiny moss growing densely on a rotted log.
Up close it’s delicate and really beautiful — but it’s so small, I have absolutely no idea what species it is. (lol)
そしてもう1種類。
And the second type.
これも山ではよく見かけるタイプ。
「見たことある気がする選手権」なら優勝候補です。
This one is a type you often spot in the mountains.
If there were a “Seen It Before But Can’t Place It” championship, this would be a top contender.
ただ、名前はわかりません（笑）
でも今回大事なのは名前よりも、
But I have no idea what it’s called. (lol)
But what matters this time isn’t the name —
「この苔、流木でも生きられるんじゃないか？」
“Could this moss survive on driftwood too?”
という雑だけどロマンある発想です。
実際、山では朽ち木や倒木に着生していたので、環境を再現すればワンチャンあるはず。
That rough-but-romantic idea is what’s driving this.
In the mountain, it was attached to rotted and fallen logs, so if I recreate that environment, there’s definitely a chance.
今回の流木——形が良すぎる7cmの主役
Today’s Driftwood — A 7cm Star With Perfect Form
そして、今回使う流木はこちら。
And here’s the driftwood I’m using this time.
サイズは全長7cmほど。
小さいながらも形がめちゃくちゃ良い。
About 7cm in total length.
Small, but the shape is incredible.
なんというか…
「山で100年生きてた龍の化石」
みたいな雰囲気があります（笑）
How do I put it…
“A fossilized dragon that lived 100 years in the mountains.”
That’s the kind of vibe it gives off. (lol)
撒きゴケは乾燥との勝負になるので、まずはしっかり吸水させておきました。
ここをケチると苔がカラッカラになります。
人間でいうところの、
サウナ後に水飲ませてもらえない状態です。
Since makigoke is a race against drying out, I made sure to soak the driftwood thoroughly first.
Skip this step and the moss dries out completely.
It’s the human equivalent of
not being given water after a sauna session.
撒きゴケ準備——苔を細かく刻む
Prep Work — Chopping the Moss Into Fine Fragments
採取した苔をハサミで細かくしていきます。
I’ll chop the collected moss into fine pieces with scissors.
この作業、最初はちょっと抵抗あるんですよね。
「苔を切り刻んで大丈夫なん…？」
ってなるんですが、苔は細かくした断片から再生する種類も多く、
これが撒きゴケ法の面白いところ。
This part feels a bit wrong at first.
“Is it okay to chop moss up like this…?”
But many types of moss can regenerate from tiny fragments —
and that’s actually what makes the makigoke method so interesting.
むしろ細かい方が着生ポイントが増えるので、広がりやすかったりします。
苔界の”分裂して増える系主人公”です。
In fact, smaller pieces mean more attachment points, so the moss can actually spread more easily.
The moss world’s version of a “hero who multiplies through division.”
いざ撒きゴケ！ピンセットと苔の格闘が始まる
Time to Scatter! The Battle Between Tweezers and Moss Begins
まず1種類目を右側へ。
First, moss type 1 goes on the right side.
これがねぇ…
めちゃくちゃ難しい（笑）
And this is where it gets tricky…
It’s incredibly hard. (lol)
ピンセットに引っ付く。
指にも引っ付く。
水滴にも持っていかれる。
It sticks to the tweezers.
It sticks to your fingers.
Water droplets carry it away.
もう苔が、
「おれはそこには住まん」
って抵抗してるみたいなんです（笑）
It’s like the moss is saying
“I’m not living there.”
It really feels like it’s putting up a fight. (lol)
続いてもう1種類を左側へ。
Next, moss type 2 goes on the left side.
両方撒き終わった状態がこちら。

完成！2種の苔が自然なグラデーションを生んだ
Done! Two Moss Types Created a Beautiful Natural Gradient
これ、めちゃくちゃ良くないですか？
黄緑寄りの苔と、深緑寄りの苔が混ざって、自然にグラデーションっぽくなってるんです。
Doesn’t this look amazing?
The yellow-green moss and the deep-green moss have blended together, creating a natural gradient effect.
山で見る倒木って、実はこんな感じでいろんな苔が共存してることが多いんですよね。
「単色でキレイ」じゃなく、
“ちょっと雑で自然”
なのが逆にリアルで美しい。
Fallen logs in the mountain actually look just like this — multiple moss species coexisting together.
Not “beautiful in a single color,” but rather —
“a little rough and natural”
— and that messiness is what makes it real and beautiful.
苔テラリウムって、
完成品を見るのも楽しいんですが、
「この苔、ここで生きるかな？」
って想像しながら作る過程が最高におもしろい気がします。
With moss terrariums,
looking at the finished product is great — but,
“Will this moss survive here?”
The process of making it while imagining that question — that’s where the real fun is.

ちなみに後日談。
この流木、現在は容器の中で育成中なんですが…
A quick update from after the fact.
This driftwood is currently growing in a container… and, well…
霧吹きするたびに苔が吹き飛びます（笑）
Every time I spray it, the moss blows away. (lol)
「シュッ！」
*Spray!*
「あぁーーー！！」
*”Noooooo!!”*
です。
That’s what happens every single time.
せっかく置いた苔が旅立っていくので、
またピンセットで拾って戻します。
完全に”苔介護”です。
The moss I carefully placed just drifts away,
so I pick it back up with tweezers and put it back. Again.
It’s basically “moss caregiving” at this point.
でもこの時期を越えてちゃんと着生してくれると、急に安定してくるんですよね。
ここを乗り越えられるかが勝負。
But once it gets through this phase and properly attaches, it suddenly becomes stable.
Whether it can push through this stage — that’s the whole game.
まとめ——名前より感じること、それが苔遊びの本質
Wrap-Up — Feeling It Matters More Than Naming It
今回の実験で改めて思ったんですが、
苔って「完成した姿」だけじゃなく、
“育っていく途中”がめちゃくちゃ面白いんですよね。
Doing this experiment reminded me of something —
With moss, it’s not just about the “finished form” —
the process of “growing toward it” is just as fascinating.
名前がわからなくても、
高級な素材じゃなくても、
山で出会った小さな苔に
「ここで育ってみる？」って新しい居場所を作ってあげる。
なんかそれだけで、ちょっとワクワクします。
Even if you don’t know the name,
even if the materials aren’t fancy,
giving a tiny piece of mountain moss
a new home with “Want to try growing here?” — just that is enough.
And somehow, just that simple thing makes me genuinely excited.
果たしてこの謎苔たちは、無事に流木へ根付くのか…。
成功するか失敗するかはまだわかりませんが、
こういう”答えのない実験”こそ、苔遊びの醍醐味かもしれません（笑）
Will these mystery mosses successfully take root on the driftwood…?
Whether it succeeds or fails, I have no idea yet —
but this kind of “experiment with no fixed answer” might be the real joy of moss-keeping. (lol)
