今回は、京都でも有名な神社の山へ苔調査に行ってきました。
This time, I headed to a famous shrine mountain in Kyoto for a moss survey.
以前から気になっていた場所。
A place I’d had my eye on for a while.
「苔の当たりスポットなんちゃうか？」という期待を胸にいざ入山。
“This has gotta be a moss goldmine, right?” — I headed up with high hopes.
……と、ここで痛恨のミス。
…And then I made a painful mistake.
山道の写真を撮り忘れるという失態（笑）

山道に入るとすぐ！スギゴケの蒴が迎えてくれる

山道に入ってすぐ目に飛び込んできたのがこちら。
The moment I stepped onto the mountain path, this jumped right into my eyes.
スギゴケの蒴（さく）
Sugigoke (Polytrichum) capsules (sporophytes).
これ、ほんまに苔？って思うくらいの景色
The scenery was so stunning, I honestly thought — “Is this really moss?”
まるで小さな花畑。
It looked just like a tiny flower field.
正直、苔を知らない人なら
Honestly, if someone unfamiliar with moss saw this,
「これが苔です」って言われてもピンとこないと思います。
they probably wouldn’t believe it even if you told them, “This is moss.”
でもこれが、苔の世界の “華やぎ” なんですよね。
But this is exactly the “glamour” of the moss world.

タチコケの中にちょこんと顔を出すホソバオキナゴケ。

こういう「共存してる構図」って、見てて飽きないんですよね。
This kind of “coexistence composition” never gets old to look at.
苔って単体で見るより
Moss is so much more striking when multiple species mix together —
“混ざり合ってるときの美しさ”がエグイ。
the beauty when they blend together is on a whole other level.
ハマキゴケ。
Hamakigoke.
しっかり湿度がある場所なので、葉はあまり巻いていません。
The humidity here is solid, so the leaves aren’t curling much.

ハマキゴケは乾燥すると葉を巻く性質がある。
Hamakigoke curls its leaves when it dries out.
つまり、「巻いてない＝環境がいい」っていうサイン。
So “not curled = good environment” — it’s a sign of healthy conditions.
苔は “見た目で環境がわかる生き物” なんですよね。
Moss is a creature that reveals the environment just by how it looks.
これ知ると観察の面白さが一気に上がります。
Once you know this, observing moss becomes way more fun.
そしてこのホソバオキナゴケのコロニー
And this Hosobaokinagoke colony —
サイズは小さいけど、完成度が高すぎる。
small in size, but the level of perfection is off the charts.
正直これ、そのままテラリウムに持って帰りたくなるやつ（笑）
Honestly, I wanted to take it home and pop it straight into a terrarium. (lol)
神社エリアへ——石と苔と、時間の重なり

神社エリアに入ると、石と苔の世界。

石壁にびっしり生えた苔たち。
Moss growing densely across the stone walls.
これがもう…時間の積み重ねそのもの。
It’s just… the very accumulation of time, made visible.

さらに、神様の顔にも苔が。
And even the deity’s face was covered in moss.
これ、普通なら「汚れ」だけど
Normally this would just be “dirt,”
苔になると一気に “神秘感” に変わるのが面白いところ。
but when it’s moss, it instantly transforms into something “mystical” — that’s what makes it so fascinating.

The stone steps area is pure moss territory.
乾燥ヒジキゴケ、ハリガネゴケっぽいやつ、ハイゴケの絨毯。
Dried Hijikigoke, something that looks like Harigane-goke, and a carpet of Haigoke.
特にハイゴケの広がりは圧巻。
The spread of Haigoke in particular is breathtaking.
石に刻まれた文字と苔。
Text carved into stone, paired with moss.
人工物と自然のコラボが、ええ味出してます。
The collaboration between the man-made and the natural gives it such a wonderful character.
倒木と岩——苔は終わりから始まる生き物
Fallen Logs and Rocks — Moss Is a Creature That Begins at the End
倒木にも苔が侵略中（笑）
Moss is “invading” the fallen log, too. (lol)
でもこれ、ただの侵略じゃないんです。
But this isn’t just an invasion — it’s something more.

倒木＝終わった命
A fallen log = a life that has ended.
そこに新しい命が広がる。
And from that ending, new life spreads.
つまり苔は、

“再生のスタート地点” なんです。
the “starting point of regeneration.”
朽ちた切り株には、モフモフのホソバオキナゴケ。
On a rotted stump — a soft, fluffy layer of Hosobaokinagoke.
これは完全に “天然盆栽”。
This is pure “natural bonsai.”
そして岩にもびっしり苔。
And the rocks are also densely covered in moss.
こういうの見てると、
When you see this,
「苔ってどこでも生きるな…」って思うけど
you might think “moss can survive anywhere…” — but actually, it’s the opposite.
実際は逆で、

この場所、この湿度、この光。
This exact place, this exact humidity, this exact light.
全部が揃ったところにしか現れない。

人工 vs 天然の苔盆栽——時間だけは再現できない

そしてまさかの人口苔盆栽（笑）
And then — an unexpected artificial moss bonsai. (lol)
もちろん綺麗やけど…
Beautiful, of course… but.
そのあとに見た天然の切り株盆栽。
And then I saw the natural stump bonsai right after.
これがもう圧勝。
Total victory. No contest.

Humans can “reproduce” things, but they cannot “create time.”

今回は、京都の神社で苔調査をしてきました。
This time, I did a moss survey at a shrine in Kyoto.
しゃがみこんだり、這い上がったり、
Crouching down, crawling around —
周りから見たら完全に怪しいおっさんやったと思います（笑）
from the outside, I must have looked like a completely suspicious middle-aged guy. (lol)
でも、見ようとしないと、この世界は一生見えない。
But if you don’t try to look, this world will remain invisible to you forever.
苔は、声を出さない。
Moss doesn’t speak.
でも、ちゃんと語りかけてくる。
But it always has something to say.
「急がなくていい」
“No need to rush.”
「そこに根を張れ」
“Put down your roots right there.”
「時間は味方になる」
“Time is on your side.”
そんなことを、静かに教えてくれる。
That’s what it quietly teaches us.
“小さな命ほど、深いことを知っている。”
